Director's Statement

I was raised in a church where my parents were very involved and my best friend was the pastor’s daughter. During our teen years, we were the theater nerds who wore black all the time—dark lipstick, chokers, black platform shoes. And we never saw Black girls like ourselves on TV. I used to pretend to be Ellie Nash from Degrassi, and while I adored her character, younger me would have loved to have seen a Black goth girl in a teen setting.
WELCOME HOME pays homage to coming-of-age shows like MY SO-CALLED LIFE. It’s my personal interpretation of teen angst mixed in with my experiences of church and religion.
